Rick Murphy offers lessons to 5,500 Baseball Fans
June 30, 2010

Rick Murphy, PGA director of instruction at the Carolina Golf Academy in Greensboro, N.C., gave a simultaneous golf lesson to some 5,500 fans attending the Greensboro Grasshoppers baseball game on May 15. Murphy and his staff also provided free 10-minute lessons before the game as part of PGA Free Lesson Month.

Though an attempt to break the Guinness World Record for the "most people simultaneously taking a golf lesson" would not be certified, the world record is 632, set in China, on December 11, 2009.

Murphy taught participants the basic body motion of a golf stroke, the proper grip and the left hand and right hand alignments at impact, using the mascot "Guilford" in his lesson.

One of the most successful growth-of-the-game initiatives in the golf industry, PGA Free Lesson Month is a collaborative campaign spearheaded by The PGA of America, Golf Digest Publications and Golf Channel.

2010 Grooves Issue
January 08, 2010

For the 2010 season, the CPGA will not implement the new condition of competition requiring players to use irons and wedges with reduced groove volume and groove edge sharpness for clubs with lofts of 25° or more.  This will apply to all CPGA majors, pro-ams, senior events, Member qualifiers for the PGA and Nationwide Tours, and other miscellaneous events.

The Section’s Tournament Committee will be reviewing this position on an annual basis, but it is not likely that the condition will be adopted before January 1, 2014.

In 2010, the PGA of America
will adopt the condition of competition for the PGA Championship, Senior PGA Championship, Grand Slam of Golf, and be recommended for use at the 2010 Ryder Cup.

The condition will not be in effect at any PGA of America Member Championships (i.e. PNC, Senior PNC, Assistant PC, Winter Championships, Tournament Series, or Team Championship), or any of its junior or amateur events.

The PGA Tour (including the Champions and Nationwide Tours), European PGA Tour, other members of the International Federation of PGA Tours, and the LPGA
will adopt this condition of competition at their tournaments in 2010.  PGA Tour and Nationwide Tour Monday (event) qualifiers will also adopt the condition; however, at Thursday pre-qualifiers, the condition will not be in effect.

The USGA
will implement the condition for the 2010 U.S. Open, U.S. Women’s Open, and U.S. Senior Opens, as well as sectional (final stage) qualifying events for these three championships.  The condition will not be in effect at local (first stage) qualifying events for these championships and any team competitions that are contested by amateurs only.  There is no local (first stage) qualifying for the U.S. Women’s Open or U.S. Senior Open.

The USGA will adopt the condition of competition for U.S. Open local qualifying beginning in 2011 and for the national championships and team competitions it conducts for amateur players no later than 2014, as originally announced.
